Dieting and investing: Simple, but not easy

Similarly, the interests of Wall Street and most of the financial media run counter to the interests of investors. They need you to pay high fees and stay “tuned in” to what is nothing more than noise. The good news is that both the diet “game” and the investment game can be won by following simple strategies. You just have to have the knowledge about them and the discipline to adhere to them.

The three of us know how rare this is. Our careful review of the research on dieting left us ready to shut the door on further dieting research, because it so seldom leads to sustained weight loss. We analyzed the 20 most rigorous tests of low-calorie, low-fat, or low-carbohydrate diets that looked at how much weight people kept off for two or more years. According to these randomized controlled trials, which are the gold standard form of evidence for any treatment, the average amount of weight loss maintained by dieters for at least two years didn’t even reach two pounds.

Nutrition a “desperately neglected” aspect of mother and baby health

Professor Alex Milton

The reasons for this neglect are understandable but not justifiable. The World Health Organisation (WH) estimates that two-thirds of the nearly seven million child deaths in developing countries each year are directly caused by infectious diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria and that undernutrition contributes to 45 per cent of these deaths. Professor Black spoke about his research into the interventions to reduce undernutrition in mothers and young children. Professor Lawrence Haddad of the Institute of Development Studies at Sussex University also spoke at the seminar, focusing on interventions that can be taken regarding stunting, where children are too short for their age. He pointed out: Agriculture does have the potential to dramatically accelerate stunting declines. We must realise that potential, because nutrition specific programmes on their own will, at best, reduce stunting by 20 per cent. The seminar will also highlight some of the ground-breaking research being undertaken by researchers in Trinity.
